The power of relationships…

80% of the jobs I’ve been offered in a 24-year career have come from companies where I already had an existing relationship with someone at that company…

And they put in a good word for me…

✅ Your reputation as a professional software developer matters.
✅ Your reputation as a confident communicator matters.
✅ Your reputation as a team player matters.

So today is Button Day (established in 1938). My grandma left me her collection of buttons, along with two of her sewing baskets, and a biscuit tin full of notions (a British band name, perhaps? “Biscuit Tin of Notions”).

What are things that connect you with your past? Which of them supports your growth? Which of them keeps you tethered to a version of yourself that no longer serves your highest good?

Learning to accept feedback is not easy, but you'll improve as a software engineer and leader when you do…

The problem is that our natural reaction is to become defensive and hit back…

You might think:
👉 It makes you look bad
👉 You need to protect your reputation
👉 You need to protect your team

Feedback is a gift:
👉 It doesn't mean you or your team are being blamed

Bei #Microsoft zu arbeiten ist ja schlecht fürs #Karma. Aber auch sehr doof fürs laufende Leben:

> Microsoft's culture isn't simply repugnant, it's actively dystopian and deeply abusive. Workers are evaluated based on their adherence to pseudo-science, their "achievements" — which may be written by generative AI — potentially evaluated by managers using generative AI.

Ed Zitron's Where's Your Ed At · The Cult of MicrosoftAt the core of Microsoft, a three-trillion-dollar hardware and software company, lies a kind of social poison — an ill-defined, cult-like pseudo-scientific concept called 'The Growth Mindset" that drives company decision-making in everything from how products are sold, to how your on-the-job performance is judged. I am not speaking in hyperbole.

Leadership is NOT just for managers…

ANYONE can show leadership, no matter what level you're at.

Leadership can be daunting; try starting with self-leadership.

👉 Build self-awareness
👉 Practice active listening
👉 Stop blaming other people
👉 Practice and share your gratitude
👉 Take steps to protect your wellbeing
👉 Document your core values - live by them

A strong mindset aids in overcoming challenges and reaching goals.

Without a positive mindset, individuals struggle with self-doubt.

Ways to improve your mindset:
1. Replace self-limiting thoughts with empowering ones.
2. Step out of your comfort zone to expand your perspective.
3. Believe abilities and skills can be developed through effort and learning.
4. Spend time with people who inspire and encourage you to think positively.
